I am Hoang Hoa, and I extend my respectful greetings to all of you.

It is a tremendous honor for me to have been invited by the Organizing Committee to open this re-election fundraiser for Ms. Mary Hien Pollett, as she seeks a second term (2026–2030) on the Evergreen School District Board of Education.

Ladies and gentlemen,

In 1993, a young Vietnamese woman arrived in the United States with her father—a former officer in the Republic of Vietnam Military Forces and a former political prisoner who had endured nearly seven years of imprisonment in re-education camps following the Fall of Saigon in 1975. They came as political refugees under the HO-17 program.

That young woman breathed the air of freedom in America—a land where great dreams become reality and where she would go on to soar up the sky of American education. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from UCLA, followed two years later by a Master’s degree in Education from SJSU. Over the next twenty-five years, she served as a mathematics teacher and eventually as the Principal of Yerba Buena High School, a renowned high school in San Jose. She brought great distinction to the school; the wall of her principal’s office are lined with numerous awards, commendations, certificates, and letters of appreciation from the California State Legislature, the California Department of Education, the Santa Clara County Office of Education, and the City of San Jose. There are also many expressions of gratitude from both the Vietnamese community and the friends’ community for her support of events such as "Thank You" ceremonies for Vietnamese wounded soldiers, cultural performances, Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations, birthday parties, and memorial services. Notably, under her guidance, Yerba Buena High School students organize an annual flag-lowering ceremony to commemorate "Black April 30th."

In 2022, she was elected as a Board Member for the Evergreen School District, serving the 2022–2026 term. During this time, she achieved two major milestones for both the Vietnamese community and the friends’ community. Working alongside the Board of Trustees, she saved O.B. Whaley Elementary School from closure by successfully re-purposing its educational mission. Additionally, she spearheaded a resolution commemorating the "Black April" (April 30th) tragedy, which was unanimously approved by the Evergreen School District Board of Trustees — a source of great pride for the Vietnamese community in Evergreen and Northern California alike.

In early 2025, she assumed the role of Chief Business Official for the Millbrae School District (south of San Francisco), a position she continues to hold.

Given her academic background, outstanding achievements, and extensive experience in managing educational and financial operations across school districts—as well as the tangible benefits she has delivered to the Vietnamese and wider communities—Mary Hiền Pollett is highly deserving of support. She merits the votes of the Vietnamese and other communities on Tuesday November 3rd, 2026 to serve a second term (2026–2030) on the Evergreen School District Board of Trustees, allowing her to complete the unfinished goals to serve the communities and educate the students.

Thank you,
